InCopy insists updates are required when no one else is editing

I have a user who is working on text in InCopy, he will make some edits and then check them in, then a little later (as short as a couple of minutes) he will come back to make another edit and it will insist that he needs to update even though no one else has looked at that file in a week. This was mostly just an annoyance as the update would run and no new edits would come with it and he would just keep going about his work, but yesterday it destroyed some of his edits on the update reverting to his previous check in. Any ideas on what would be causing this?

Is there an InDesign user editing the layout that contains the story?

Or is there another user with access to this file that has the same username?

To prevent editing losses enable track changes and use it some backup software.
