New to InCopy, as are my designers using InDesign: are Stories required?

When I started attempting to work with my designers' InDesign files in InCopy, it gives an error that no stories were found, so I think my designers just don't use stories at all. Must they in order to work with me via InCopy?

The InDesign user must export the content out for using in InCopy. There is no other way.
