Question

"This document contains no inCopy stories" Error

We’ve been working on this same project for a couple weeks but suddenly I’m getting the following error when I try to open it in inCopy:

“Because this document contains no inCopy stories, Gallery View and Story View are not available.”

I can look at the document, but I can’t edit anything.

I’m opening an .indd directly that our Art Director is editing (we don’t use Assignments). All the .icml files are located alongside the .indd file in the same Google Drive folder. I can open and edit the .icml files individually, but thats a pain and I obviously can’t see them in the layout.

We’ve been using this same system for years—I’m not sure what would have changed overnight. I’ve tried moving the entire folder off Google Drive and opening the .indd locally (no luck). And I’ve tried opening a backup of project that was saved prior to the last time I was able to make edits (also no luck). I’ve also tried completely uninstalling inCopy, and then reinstalling it, as well as backtracking to a couple previous versions of inCopy—no change.

I’m running macOS Tahoe 26.5.2 and have tried inCopy versions 21.2, 21.3, and 21.4. Like I said, this was working just last week.

Any guesses?

Not much of a Google Drive fan for this workflow (Dropbox and OneDrive work very well, IME) but make sure that there are no smart sync features in play here and the everthing is fully synced to your harddrive.

No issues on that front. Like I said, I tried moving everything over locally (both the updated files and the backup of the older files I know worked last week) with no change.
