Question

Am I right in thinking this is what Flash Media Server is for...

Hi,

I will be migrating hosting companies soon and I'm looking at using a VPS (virtual private server) along with Flash Media Server.  My site has loads of videos on it which currently stream pretty slowly.  If I do use Flash Media Server will there be an increase in streaming speed of the videos? Each video is from 10 - 35 minutes i FLV and F4V format.  Is this what Flash Media Server is mainly used for?

Thanks in advance,

Ben.

    Hi Ben

Yes. You should see an increase in video streaming speed as long as your server and network can support the throughput. It could be that your web server is slow and can't stream the videos quick enough. Streaming from FMS is more efficient because the user doesn't need to download the whole file to play it from different spots, or if they don't watch the whole thing then it doesn't get all downloaded. Web servers will do that and in turn it takes more resources.

    Hi Graeme,

Looks like I will be going the Flash Media Server route.  Thanks for the help.
