FMS 3.0.2 Update - how should updates be applied?

After getting FMS 3.0.1 development server up and running for testing, my employer purchased a license for the streaming edition. I noticed that FMS 3.0.2 Update was available so I downloaded it. I backed up my application and conf directories before installing 3.0.2 which was fortunate. The update replaced all my configuration files.

The update simply does a full install. The release notes don't explain that existing configurations will be overwritten, nor does it recommend backing up. Is this what I can expect for all updates?

Yes. The onus of maintaining configuration and application assets should be a part of your change control management.
The installer notifies the user that all the data will be overwritten, and overwrites configuration files to ensure that all the changes made to the binaries are reflected with changes in the configuration files. To prevent conflicts of interest with shared memory and services, only one version of the server can be installed at a time.
