Hello,

we plan to operate an online class room,

up to 10 rooms with 10-20 students each, normal 640x480 max video,

teacher broadcasts video/audio, the rest can text chat!

Any suggestions regarding hardware? Will one server be enough?

Thank you for your answers

One server can certainly handle this... I routinely serve 10 times that volume on a single box. Given your use case, I'd be comfortable with a 2 core 2+gHz / 4g ram machine.

Given the large video image, you'll likelly be using a fairly high video bitrate, so you'll want to make sure you have enough bandwidth at the server to handle all of the streams. Factoring the max concurrent users for the use case you described and a 500kbps stream, each room is going to consume about 10.5Mbps of bandwidth, so your 10 rooms would overstaurate a single 100Mbps network interface.
