Question

hds-vod configuration

Hi,

Running AMS 5 on a VM server with 4 GB RAM.  AMS has 1.5GB configured for FLV cache.

All videos are on-demand and streamed using HDS or HLS.  Each video has 3 bit-rate variants at 1000, 2000, 3000 kbps.

Playback is via OSMF Strobe Media Player.

Users are now reporting buffering issues on playback, even on high bandwidth connections, and investigations have shown that memory on the server is not stressed, but disk I/O shows queuing when buffering occurs.

Network investigations show that the same fragment is attempted to be retrieved repeatedly when buffering occurs.

What configuration settings, AMS and Apache, should I be looking to change to improve this situation and stop the buffering that users are seeing.

Regards

Peter Hall

I recommend you just stick Varnish in front of your AMS server. Varnish will scale to 10s of GB/s of HTTP traffic.

Varnish Cache as a robust distribution mechanism for HLS and HDS video

Very little these days. I suspect that the product is all but abandoned. It has been three years since the last major version, and nothing is on the horizon. The world is moving towards a different streaming strategy.
