Hi, I'm about to purchase an IP camera to use for live streaming.  Can I use this camera for streaming through FMS 3.5?  I do not want to purchase something if I can't use it.

    yes, you can.

i have done it and documented the steps i took : http://www.livepuntobanco.com/ip-camera-fms-flash-video-howto/

i have more advanced versions now, which mix picture-in-picture, dynamic text, zooming and so on : automated according to game events etc.

Thank you very much for your answer.  Can you perhaps give me an indication what type of webcam I can purchase for live streaming if the camera is located in the open air?

In general, no, IP cameras cannot make a direct connection to an FMS application.

Some IP camera manufacturers provide drivers that allow their cameras to be used as a webcam (for example, Axis Communications). With such a driver, you can use a publishing application like Flash Media Live Encoder to publish the feed from the IP cam to FMS.
