Question

Is there a practical, economical way to use Streaming Video (flvs or f4vs)

Over the past couple of years, I'd been told by numerous techs at 1&1 that they supported Streaming for FLVs, and I'd planned to make streaming videos a mainstay in my website.

Now, as I went to implement that, I learned that this was a 'miscommunication' and that they do not actually support streaming, or no longer support it if they had in the past.

So I'm trying to find out if there's a cost effective way to stream videos for my website or if I'm better off just using the regular progressive downloads.

The site I'm building is based on the Gaia framework, and on several pages (between 5 and 10), a video will begin when the visitor arrives at that page.  I'll also have an expanding number of videos that can be played by clicking on various buttons.  Videos (including lots of 3d animation) will range from 30 seconds to roughly 10 minutes.

Thanks for any information on this.

I don't know what is your budget but FMS comes with Streaming Edition which would cost around 1000$ (though i am not sure about exact price - you can check on adobe site or reseller).

Streaming is always preferrable over Progressive download for various reasons (you can just google - Progressive download vs Streaming - you should get most of the reasons).

I will post with some more details - but i thought i will just give something for you start thinking about or investigate about

Thanks.  Would love to hear whatever insights you're able to provide.

As for budget - I currently spend about $12 a month with 1&1 web hosting (and a similar amount for another web host specifically for Drupal).

So spending $1000 to get my own flash streaming server probably isn't in the cards right now.

Didn't know if streaming is feasible with any of the shared hosting providers or some other alternative.

Since you're not up to getting your own server and software I would suggest shared FMS hosting, try www.influxis.com. They provide custom plans on what you may need. There's no reason to have FMS on the same server for your particular needs I think.
