Need help choosing between Streaming & Interactive server

Hi All,

We are migrating from Windows Media Server to Flash Media Server and hence I need some guidance. Below are my requirements:

  1. Be able to deliver videos in the form of playlists. Eg: Inserting advertisements before the main video plays
  2. Restrict access to certain videos as these will be available to only paid customers
  3. Be able to create apps where users can upload their own videos. I guess this one requires the Enterprise server. However this requirement is not critical.

Any other tip for first timers is more than welcome. Thanks for taking time to read this post.

Thanks,

Mushtaq

You will need the interactive version to create server side playlists. Your other option is to get the streaming version and create a playlist in an XML file (for example), load that in to the client side custom video player (you will have to have this made) and go from there.

For creating a playlist that runs automatically like TV and people just "tune in" whenever, then you have to use FMIS though. I see no reason why you would need the Enterprise version so don't worry about having to buy that.

Thanks to both for your replies. It really helped.

One of the features that I currently have on Windows Media server is the ability to create playslists on the media server when creating the publishing point.(screenshot attached). This makes it easy for me to insert ads without having to write any code.

Also my other critical requirement is to protect some videos from public access.

So which of the FMS' version will let me do that and possibly more?

    Thanks again for your time

Be able to create apps where users can upload their own videos. I guess this one requires the Enterprise server. However this requirement is not critical. - Do you mean publishing your own content - if yes then you don't need Enterprise Edition to do that - its possible using Interactive Edition or even in Streaming edition. Do let me know if i did not get what you were trying to say.

    musomn1,

I'm new to this as well, but will share what I know. If you want playlists, you're going to have to ante up for FMIS.

FMSS is a great package but, as I underdtand it, is limited to streaming only. So, if you want playlists, cam to cam, chat, ad roatation and all of the great things we all want to do...then it's FMIS.

I am by no means the expert here, but I do know this much. I just picked up FMIS myself.

    I hope this helps!

    Sincerely,
