Of course you can record audio as mp3 format, this is not troubleshooting whatsoever. Step by step guides here: use this app to record streaming audio as mp3 directly. All steps can be reduced to one - record while you play audio.

Dear bjosh44 this person wanted to record MP3 using FMS which is currently unavailable due to royalty fees on a copyright protected codec however this may change in the future because the U.S. patent holders don't seem to be enforcing the copyright on the codec. Germany or somebody threw a fit and sued sandisk. I suppose adobe just isn't going to risk it. Go read about MP3 on wikipedia if you want to know more about what I'm talking about.

Short answer... you can't record to an MP3 file.

If your publishing client supports MP3, you can extract the audio from the recorded FLV, but you need to use a third party application for that.
