RTMFP conundrum
Okay, I admit it, I don't have oodles of cash spilling out of my pockets (yet), so as much as I would love a few full licenses of Enterprise version of FMS 4.5 (and the infrastructure to run them on), that isn't likely to happen (just yet). The second option that I got very excited about was the possibility of FMS on AWS, but as I've discovered, 4.5 isn't available (not quite yet). My project is getting close to release and as I'm heading into testing phase I'm looking forward to taking it in-house, just within a limited budget (as yet).
So I have a multi-part question here for anyone in the know:
- I completely understand the 500 / 15K limit on p2p.rtmfp.net ; it'll do me just fine for testing (and thanks, Adobe!). But what if the application actually gets popular, as we all hope, no? And I'm guessing that the limit range 500 to 15,000 translates to, "don't depend on it", which is again fair for a testing / development server, not production. With AWS, scaling up could be a lot more fluid and painless (and allows for commercial use), whereas a full FMS installation is more like 0 to 100 in 6 seconds. Just trying to be realistic here and seeing what the options are out there for a small project to grow.
- It's my understanding that on AWS, a FMS instance is not shared and hence pricier than a run-of-the-mill web server instance. Perhaps I'm understanding this incorrectly? I was looking at the pricing chart and if I'm reading it right, the "High-memory quadruple extra large" FMS instance supporting 10,000 simultaneous North American connections running at 100% capacity for the month (30 days) would set me back roughly $4030-ish -- or are the per-hour prices per user hour (per connection)?! -- with data on top of that (let's say $0.20 per GB but I know it varies by region / plan). I just want to make sure I fully understand how the pricing works.
- Presumably the transfer cost for a pure RTMFP rendezvous server would be fairly low, so most of the cost would be eaten up by the instance. Does anyone know how much data a typical RTMFP rendezvous-only session eats up?
- I've been playing around with FMS Developer to get used to the interface. When FMS 4.5 becomes available on AWS, is it safe to assume it will be basically the same thing? Any caveats I should be aware of?
- Can anyone point me toward documentation on how to set up the rendezvous service in FMS 4.5 (specifically with regards to connecting from Flash Builder)? This is more me just being lazy 😜
Thanks,
Patrick
