Question

RTMP vs HDS

I had some problems with getting RTMP to fallback into RTMPT on a video I was hosting for a client du to a corporate firewall. So I changed the manifests to only use HDS streaming and that worked like a charm!

So I'm wondering if I shouldn't be using HDS for all my web streaming and just forgo RTMP all together. I don't know enough about the protocols to know if there are any kind of inherent advantages RTMP has over HDS.

I'm running Flash Media Server 4.5.1, delivering multi bitrate on demand video and occasional live video.

Will the HDS work with ALL devices like Android/iPhone/iPad ???

Can you do VOD with HDS then ???

I'm a little confused by your questions...

My post is only about VOD. I use HLS for iOS and HDS or RTMP otherwise. The HDS works on all non iOS devices, that is why I'm asking how it compares to RTMP.

Hope that clarifies.

I am trying to get my head wrapped around HDS and a 'beginner' explanation of the protocol and what it will work with (devices) either VOD or Live Streaming.

Can you shed some light on this to a non-expert?
