Saving Message History

I am working in a chat application. I am wanting to save the messages in a chat application between users for future purposes.

Is it possible to save the chat history in the Flash Media Server itself, or would it be needed to be saved in database?

If you can provide any tutorials, examples, suggestions or guidelines? I would appreciate it greatly. I have been searching all over the internet for examples and documentations but found nothing relevant.
