Question

User Self-Uploads, automatic transcoding?

Hi there,

We have installed Adobe Flash Server 3.5 and are currently evaluating it.  The installation went well and is working fine.

I have some questions however.

We were looking for a product that would not only stream video, but also make it easier for our users to upload videos.

Is there a easy (web-based) method for users to upload their videos to the server?

Or will they need to have ftp access to the /applications/vod/ directory?

Is there any kind of automatic transcoding available?  I'm ok with serving only flv's, but it would be nice if the user could upload any format and have it automatically converted.

Thanks,

Jeph

    Jeph,

The Flash Media Server itself doesn't support transcoding files, but software like the Flash Media Encoding Server or Adobe partner solutions such as those from Rhozet, Telestream, and Grab Networks provide solutions with APIs that would allow you to do this in conjunction with the Flash Media Server.

Here is an article that describes the basics of doing this - the article's a bit old, but the basic premises still stand - http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashmediaserver/articles/video_sharing_web_app.html.
