What is Adobe Flash?

I have been prompted to install it or update it from various websites.    I'd like to know what it is and what it does.

    I suppose you are talking about Adobe Flash Player. Its nothing but a browser plug-in which enables to play flash movies files (.swf). You can read more about it here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
