It's indeed unusual that the Photoshop API does not allow you to save or export files in a different format, especially when the file format is similar. I encountered issues attempting to use a PSDT file as inpurt.  It complains about the file format compatibility.  The obvious workaround is to rename the file using the PSD file extension.
