Can someone recommend a font style?

I was just wondering if anyone can recommend a font which is typically American or one which has a American feel/look? I don't know if such a thing exists - I have not properly checked yet!

Any suggestions much appreciated!

Many thanks in advance!

Adam

I wonder if using Jeffersonian penmanship would do the trick, if it looks at History. I'm not sure there is a font based on the script, but a good letterer should be able to duplicate the writing of the Declaration of Independence.

    A great idea, Don.

Yes, there are a few. The actual writing was by Timothy Matlack

    Declaraton of Independence fonts -

    National Archive (Harold Lohner)
    P22 Declaration Pro (P22)
    Declare (vLetter)
    American Scribe (Three Islands Press)

There are also a number of fonts that include the 56 signatures.

Declaration of Independece (Celebrity Fontz - MyFonts)
P22 Declaration Signatures (also available packaged with P22
    Declation)

Thank you very much everyone for your responses.

Yes, sorry I should have given more info. I am designing a book cover for a book which is about why America deserves its superpower status. So it looks at American history and I guess all time periods really. So if anything I would need something which symbolizes America as a whole or perhaps its power and world status! Maybe nothing like this exists but thought I'd just ask anyway.

    Thanks for your input!!

What you'll be using them for makes a big difference. If you're making
a fourth of July greeting card or party invitation, you wouldn't want
the same feel as you would if you were printing the Congressional Record.

    Adam,

As a designer, I also need more information to respond.

There are posters and handbills from the mid-19th century that were frequently done in decorative woodtype that are highly distinctive and very American. These are the familiar "Wanted!" posters of the American West, railroad "travel" posters and theatre production posters. But as we move into the 20th century, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Art Moderne, Bauhaus and other styles become more international in their scope and choices of fonts.

So, can you tell us more what you're looking for? And what time period?

It would help to have some understanding of your purpose, and how you might use the typeface. Also, whether there is some particular era or sense of "America" you're trying to evoke.

    Cheers,
