Character width adjustment

Does anyone use character width adjustment in InDesign to manipulate text (manage widows and orphans, etc)? I ask because I have a person on my production team that does this, even though I've asked him to alter his technique. He argues that it's "common practice" however I wouldn't be inclined to manipulate the shape of type characters unless perhaps to manage space in a display headline.

Just curious what the common consensus is...

This is not, not common. It is poor a practice, no professional would do this on regular basis as a  work around.  They should learn to set type not force fit.
