Contextual Alternates inaccessible in character panel with open type fonts (otf)

I purchased several open type fonts with many alternates for various letters (clearly visible in the character map of my font reader) but I seem unable to access these alternates in Photoshop CC. The menu item is grayed out.in the character panel. No matter what I do, I can't seem to access them.  Thank you so much!
