flash game font embedding license

Hi there!

I'm sure this is covered in a FAQ somewhere, but I can't for the life of me find it.

Am I allowed to embed fonts I bought from Adobe (but not necessarily an Adobe Original) with a Preview & Print license in a Flash or AIR game?

I ask because I talked to some other foundries, and they had special pricing that only applied to games.

Thanks!

Yes you are. Font licensing information is available at this location http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/legal/index.html

An entry on section 14 reads,

14.7.5 You may embed copies of the font software into your electronic documents for the purpose of printing and viewing the document. If the font software you are embedding is identified as "licensed for editable embedding" on Adobe’s website at http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/legal/embeddingeula.html, you may also embed copies of that font software for the additional purpose of editing your electronic documents. No other embedding rights are implied or permitted under this license.

    Hi Tom!

Nice to see you here. (We've met, but you probably don't remember me.)

Anyway, it seems I have a bit of a problem now, and I hope the two of you can help me some more.

I was asking because there was this game contest going on, and going off of Miguel's answer, I went ahead and submitted my entry last night, before I got Tom's answer or had a chance to respond to Miguel's.

If you're telling me that using the font in this way is a violation of my license, I will ask to have my entry withdrawn... but I wanted to make absolutely certain that that was the case here.

Thank you both for your time.

I haven't worked for Adobe since last December, so Miguel is the more current authority. I can only speak to a historical position.  :)

I certainly wouldn't suggest you withdraw an entry because of my comment. I assume Miguel is right that it's okay, but given Adobe past position in this area, that section of the font livensing FAQ is not useful support for this proposition.

    Cheers,

    T

However, it has long been Adobe's position that Flash/AIR apps are not documents.... might want to get that section of the FAQ expanded to cover applications.

    Cheers,
