Font is thinner in InDesign than in Quark Xpress. (Adobe Garamond Pro)

Hello!

I've transferred a project from Quark XPress to InDesign and have noticed a difference with the font, both onscreen and printed. InDesign, the font is slightly thinner than in Quark. I can't see that I have any unusual setting selected in either program.

Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Maybe if you provided some screen shots, it might help.

It is not unusual that screen renditions might vary a bit in terms of perceived “thickness,” but at the same point size, the printed output appearance should be the same.

Is it possible that in the particular design, transparency is involved?

Thanks for your reply.

See a screenshot below. Both Quark and InDesign are using the same font, font-size and colour. The zoom level is very slightly different between them but it's still easy to see that the InDesign rendition is thinner than in Quark.

This is also the case when printed out, the InDesign text just looking thinner and less crisp on the page. In fact, the edges of the font in the InDesign print out are also not as smooth as on the font printed from Quark - a different but perhaps connected issue?

Exactly what type of printer are you printing to? PostScript or non-PostScript?

Printing directly from InDesign is really a "no-no" so to speak. Best results are to export PDF/X-4 and then print from either Adobe Reader or Acrobat to your output device. If that doesn't work, please post an InDesign sample and resultant PDF for us to look at.
