Font licensing

I'm working for a client who is a reasonably large business based in Italy.

 

I'm completing an integrated campaign which will be executed across multiple channels including print, digital and outdoor advertising and some in-store items.

 

Throughout the campaign, I'm using Helvetica Neue. Our client does not have this font but they do have around 3 people who will need to use it to co-author some of the work.

 

In addition, the work will be sent to various countries for translation.

 

Can you please advise who needs licences, what type and the cost?

    Be aware that Helvetica Neue is a Mac system font which is not available on a Windows system. Your better choice would be to use the Helvetica Neue Lt which is available in OTF format on the Linotype site. Then, it could be used both on Mac and on Windows.

    Note that the Helvetica Neue family is not offered by the Adobe Fonts service.

    Everyone who needs to work with the font needs a license. If it is one the Adobe fonts they could have an Adobe Fonts license, but this is not available separately. If some may not have Creative Cloud, then you should choose a font available for commercial licensing. Translators work in different ways. If they translate only text separately, they don't need the font. If they are sent files for final editing, a license must be purchased for each one. 

    Many people will ask you to send fonts. You should be aware that this is a breach of the license. However, you cannot expect contractors like translators to buy fonts for a one off project, unless this is stipulated in the translation contract. You need to budget for purchasing adequate font licenses.
