I used a font on my client's website, they have a subscription, but still got the email that it is

Your use is only covered by your Adobe CC subscription if you load the fonts according to Adobe’s guidelines: https://helpx.adobe.com/fonts/using/font-licensing.html#server

Note that by self-hosting the font files, you are not covered by your Adobe CC subscription and are required to hold the appropriate license.

And I don't really understand what is the problem when it says

If your website is viewed in the browser–either on the desktop or on a mobile device–it's covered by the web font license.

The web font license also requires that the fonts be added to your website by the embed code that we provide.

What should I have done differently?

You said you used the font on your client's web site. Exactly how did you do that? An HTML fragment might be best. And is that HTML fragment the one provided by Adobe?  If you aren't aware that there even is an HTML fragment, please let us know the app you use and the steps you follow.
