Font platform choices = iPad and Wacom tablet?

I want to make my own font. Some of the tutorials I've watched are confusing because I don't own the platforms they use (e.g. iPad). So the first step is to figure out what the particular platforms are.

I'm on a Mac, so the first choice would appear to be an iPad, using a font app from the Apple App Store, like Procreate or iFont.

Can I also use a Wacom table and a program like Calligraphr? Are there other choices?

Is there a particular platform that'a recommended?
