Question

Hypatia font crashing Quark

I got the Hypatia font (Open Type Postscript) with CS3 and really like it. The problem is, it crashes QuarkXPress (v7) whenever I try to apply a new size/weight/colour to it. All of my other fonts are fine.

I've tried turning all type-related options on and off in Quark, but to no avail. I'm on a Mac 2x3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon running OS 10.5.5, with 4GB RAM and over 400GB of available hard drive space.

I think there's a conflict between Hypatia and Quark and I just wondered if it had been reported elsewhere, or if there was anything I could try to cure it?

Many thanks for any help.

Hi Thomas - Sorry, I should have made it clear in my first post, but it is 7.31 that I'm using.

Our internal testing does not show any problems with Hypatia Sans in QuarkXPress 7.0 no matter what size/weight/color one uses... until one tries to put it into a style, in which case QXP crashes.

The problem did not occur in QuarkXPress 7.3.1, nor in QuarkXPress 8.0. So I'd suggest you get the free upgrade to 7.3.1.

I'm having a problem with Hypatia freezing Quark. It's version 7.5, I'm on a Mac 10.4.11. Tried everything and finally replaced Hypatia with Avenir. Voila! no freezing. But I really like Hypatia and want to use it in the project I'm working on. Have there been any further developments with this thread?

    >validated Hypatia in Font Book

Font Book and Font Doctor miss a few bad and problem fonts. Try the demo version of FAP (FontAgent Pro).

    Hi Thomas

    Thanks for your reply.

I've remade the same document using Arno Pro as the font and everything is fine - I can resize, change the weights, add colour etc. etc.

I should also say that I've validated Hypatia in Font Book and everything appears to be OK.

Nope, hasn't been reported previously. What happens if you use a similarly large typeface, say Arno Pro?
