Make a Font 3d

I am trying to recreate a effect in illustrator so a font looks like wood that was carved with a router.  the demo cnc app i used was able to do a rendering but i cant seem to find a way to recreate it without hand drawing each letter

    Photoshop or Illustrator can do these sorts of effects. Do a search on "engraved type effect" or "engraved text effect"....
