Question

Myriad Pro OTF regular differs from italic

We use Myriad Pro for some brochures in foreign languages.

When I type the letter 'й' in Myriad Pro (OTF) Regular for example it shows correctly in InDesign. When I use an italic it becomes a 'u'. This is a problem with the font, has anybody an idea what to do in such a case? We bought the font from Adobe, are their updates available or can I fix it myself?

A workaround I have been using for now is to skew the regular. :°/

Hey Thomas, thanks for the information. The client assures me it was a type problem but I did some research and you are right.

I only used this letter for example but I already found three more. So I had my share of surprises with this :°)

PS Neil, I will post my next problem in the Typography forum. Thanks

This is not a problem with the font, but rather the correct form for the italic of that letter. By skewing the upright form instead, you have been generating an incorrect form, which native speakers will think looks odd.

If you try any other typeface that supports that letter, and has a real italic, it changes to a "u" form for the italic. Many Windows system fonts, as well as a fair number of "Pro" fonts from Adobe, all do the same thing here. The only exception I know of is Verdana, which clearly uses just a slanted version of the upright instead of a real italic.

This is not the only Cyrillic character to undergo significant form change in the italic, by the way. You're in for a few more surprises....

    Mic,

Unfortunately, since ATM is pretty much a dead product for Macintosh, no one really visits this forum anymore. Please post in Typography: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ef602ce.eea5b3a

    Sorry for any confusion.
