Updating an old version of Avant Garde?

I have a purchased version of ITC Avant Garde that seems to be too old to work on my new computer (iMac running OS 10.9.4). It's installed in the Library/Fonts folder but doesn't show up on the font menu in any program, most importantly Quark XPress 9.5.4. Using the Update function in Quark's Usage menu gives me only the option to replace the missing Bold and Medium versions with Book, which isn't what I need in this instance. Do I need to buy all-new versions of these fonts, or can I download an update?

If you purchased a license for a copy of ITC Avant Garde from Adobe before the year 2000, most likely it was a MacOS Type 1 font.

MacOS support for Type 1 ended a few releases back. MacOS supports both TrueType (MacOS and Windows flavours) as well as OpenType fonts (both CFF and TrueType flavours).

For Adobe's Type Library, the OpenType CFF format has completely replaced the MacOS and Windows format Type 1 fonts.

There was not any “update” or “trade-in” program for this migration with Adobe's fonts.

If you need a current version of ITC Avant Garde, you will need to license the new OpenType versions.

Thanks! That's what I ended up doing in the end.
