Go to Site-->New Site.  Define a local folder.  Enter the remote information for your server and click the "Get" button to get the files from the remote to your local. David has a tutorial on this but doesn't talk about if a site is already on the remote and needs to be moved to the local, but if you've worked with websites before it shouldn't be too difficult if you prefer the visuals:

To expand on my question and make it more clear...how do I import an existing website into Dreamweaver so it can be edited?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

It's HTML - define a site in DW that points to the location of the existings sites files and begin editing them.  That's all you need to do.

Is it already a Dreamweaver site (defined in another copy of DW)?

If so, create an .ste file from the other DW site manager, copy the files and the .ste file and then using the site manager, import it into the new copy.

If not, put the files into the folder you want them (Documents/Sites is usuallly where they would go) and then define the site using the advanced settings in the site manager to locate and select the root, images and SpryAssets folders, and then set up your FTP connection (if you have one for the site).

No, it's not a Dreamweaver site. The site was created by a friend of mine who uses a Mac and different publishing program.

Then go with Murray's advice, (and mine) and simply define it as a new site in DW and point to the correct folders. Then edit to your heart's content, or your frustration limit, whichever comes first.

Go back to my original post and read it and the link I sent you to.  You need to define a New Site where you want the site to be locally and then enter the remote information.  Dreamweaver will prompt you for this information.  Then you can get the files using DWs FTP as you would any other FTP program.  The complete instructions are in David's tutorial which I linked to.

Hello Brittany,

please be carefree enough to copy the code into a really empty DW-file and look what happens. It will not do anything bad, except that you can edit further and further, by switching between source code and design view, it's true really!

... and it's the same what Maurray said above, only in MY words.

After that please load it up to your server and show us the link, so we can better analyze.

Hans-Günter
