hello,
I am trying to install acrobat reader and during the installation it says 'found a higher version of adobe acrobat reader in the installation location. installation will terminate.'
I dont want to purchase the Pro or DC, I just want a simple PDF viewer. Can anyone help?

Are you downloading the latest/current Reader installer, or do you have one on a disk, or from a link other than one on Adobe? Here's the Adobe download link, just in case:
If you haven't done so, I would also reboot your computer prior to the next installation attempt.

You may also want to run the Acrobat Cleaner and Repair Tool:
This tool will remove old traces of the prior installation of the software.
If this doesn't work, and if you're using Microsoft Windows 10, I just recently read another post from a user who suggested to check the following hidden directory path:
C:\ProgramData\Adobe
If you're not using other Adobe soctware that were installed with the Creative Cloud Desktop app, See if there are any subfolders there that may need to be manually removed.
Since you will be installing everything afresh, a couple of particular subfolders of interest are:
NOTE: The ARM subfolder is used by the Acrobat installation folder ARM which usually include the microsft installation package or setup file (.msi) in the "Cache" subfolder.
