Hello,
Updated to 10.1.7 and noticed that when you close the program an instance of acrobat stays open in task manager with high 50%+ cpu usage. Will not close at all unless you end task. if you open adobe again a new instance opens again consuming more cpu and cripples the machine with high cpu. This is on win 8 64bit machine. Had the previous release 10.1.6 working for some time on the same machine with no issues.
Thank you in advance

Identical issue with Acrobat XI Pro on Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. After viewing PDF file, upon closing Acrobat, a new Background Process starts called Adobe Acrobat (32 bit) uses 18% of cpu. I have left run for three to four hours and does not close. If I open another PDF file and then close, a second Background Process of Adobe Acrobat (32 bit) start, also using 18% of cpu. I was able to open a third PDF file and upon closing a third Background Process of Adobe Acrobat (32 bit) start, also using 18% of cpu. I did not try more. All three consume over 50% of processor and after an hour does not close. Fan and cpu begin to run hot so I manual End Task. I tried Repair Acrobat Installation command, did not fix. After searching forum used the Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool (http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html) to uninstall. Then downloaded Acrobat XI Pro from My Adobe account login. Reinstalled software. Issue gone, could not replicate even after several hours of trying. Then Checked for Updates. After updates installed, loaded and brought to version 11.0.3, problem returned as before. I have PDF files on both local drive and NAS, been able to recreate issue on both. In a PDF intensive environment, I was having to leave the task manager up and occasionally stop Background Process of Adobe Acrobat (32 bit) so as to keep processor usage and fan speed down, thanks to Goateye01 for the suggestion, I now leave Acrobat open and close the files, this way the background process hang does not occur. Additional Note, only able to create issue with standalone application, issue does not occur when in IE10 and viewing PDF files. Hopefully a fix or helpful guidance coming soon?

Adobe2Me gave me an idea, and it works ![]()
You can change the default program for pdf-files to iExplore.
Of course you loose a lot of functionality, but it works for common reading!

Exactly same issue here, with Acrobat XI Pro on Windows 8 Pro 64 bit.
I started to have this problem since I installed last Adobe upgrade (11.00.03).
Reading Adobe2Me's post about his experience with Adobe, I'm really disappointed with the behavior of Adobe support.
It looks like Adobe does not matter about the time the users spent trying to find a fix for such a problem, not to mention the hardship it caused (and it's causing).

Same here. Windows 8 64 Bit. I get multiple instance of Acrobat running, and my cpu usage raises to 99,9% until i quit them manually

Hi,
I'm an IT professional and I recently had a user with Acrobat 10.1.7 who appears to have the same problem that is being described on this thread.
With no apparent reason or cause Acrobat will freeze and begin taking up a whole core of CPU usage. In this user's case it was was 25%. This was not happening all the time, but was definitely being caused often enough to be a gigantic nuisance to her.
As there's no easy downgrade path from Acrobat 10.1.7 to 10.1.6 this is quite an annoying bug to come across as there's no good workaround. The best I can think of is installing Reader and hoping that doesn't crash on them.
This user has Windows 7 64-bit, a Dell Latitude E6410 with an i7 and 8 GB of RAM.
If there's more information I can provide an Adobe engineer outside of this thread, like running programs and processes, please be in touch with me.

Hello:
I am using Acrobat Pro XI 11.0.03 with a I5 8GB Dell XPS 18 All-In-One running Windows 8 Pro 64-bit and I too am exhibiting the same problem as the rest of the users on this string. I uninstalled and downloaded and installed the latest Adobe Reader for several days with no problem. I reinstalled Acrobat XI 11.0.03 today and the problem is back.

Hello:
Maybe Acrobat Pro X and Acrobat Pro XI are not fully compatible with Windows 8?
POSSIBLE SHORT TERM (and annoying) WORK AROUND:
Try running Acrobat Pro in XP service pack 3 compatibility mode. Our IT Engr suggested it and it works for me.
To try it:
Right click the Acrobat Pro program icon and select "troubleshoot compatibility" and follow the prompts. Thereafter, every time you open Acrobat Pro or a pdf file, you just click "yes" in the user account control window that pops up.

Thanks to AllieCrack,
I tried this workaround and the problem seems to gone away.
When you running Acrobat in "Windows 7" compytibility mode it's running without the Popup from the user account control.

I tried the Compatibility option and it did not work for me. Actually made the system less responsive in that mode when the program would not close. I have noticed that on the first instance of using Acrobat at startup/restart it functions correcetly by shutting down in the taskmgr but the repeat uses of acrobat will trigger the problem again. Obviously you can turn on and off your computer every time you use you acrobat but though it might shed some light as to why its happening.

Unfortunately: It doesn't
However, i wanted to ask you guys if someone of you use 3rd party plugins, like pitstop or quite imposing?

I was too quick earlier today.
I worked fine with the compatibility mode for several hours and dozens of pdf-files opened and closed.
Not anymore.....
Sounds even more confusing.

No go compatibility mode either (Windows 8) . . . Good suggestion though.

Add me to the list as having this problem. Do any or all of you use avast!??
I thought maybe the interation with that might be a problem?
Adobe's response is criminal. They can do nothing?
Now I know why Steve Jobs always said that Adobe Software was unstable.

I have tried several different ways to see why this is happening and trying to find a simpler way of working around the headache. Constantly having to check taskmgr is a headache.
The simple "point the finger at third party app" is a great deflection but the fact is that the same system was running everything fine before the update with the same app

I have no problems with any other applications other than Acrobat! Funny how they
can blame other applications, no one else seems to have that issue!
I am not a Big Apple person, but now I understand why Steve Jobs had this
view of Adobe.
Only after the lastest update did this problem Pop up. Cant they just look at what changed in
10.1.7 and find the interation problem. I wish I could go back.

Best solution to save my workingmood ![]()
I did got an idea after this;
In Windows8 there is an app called "Reader"
In swedish language "Läsare"
I saw this when I uninstalled Acrobat. It is a simple program that only reads pdf-files.
Can someone please try to uninstall that app and see if the conflict is there?

I decided to trouble should as AllieCrack suggested. It did not do anything as I am running windows 8, adobe x10.1. I have had the same issue as everyone above. I just right clicked on the program on the C drive and selected properties. Under the compatibility mode tab I checked the box "Run this compatiblity mode for:" From the drop down window I selected windows 7. It had previously had windows XP(service pack 3) selected. So far when I close down adobe I don't have the problem and my computer fan does not sound like it is about to blow up. I don't think this will do anything to any other programs but I will wait and see. If anyone had any feedback to this I would appreciate it.
