Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Standard.app no longer supported. How do I use what I paid for?

New Here ,
May 18, 2017 May 18, 2017

I purchased Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Standard some years ago and would like to use it. I receive a message when opening that it is no longer supported. It is registered with Adobe using the serial number. I am working on a Macbook Pro with Sierra. Could someone advise me on how to make it work?

On behalf of Adobe Systems Incorporated …

We are sorry that you are “not a happy customer at this point” but the fact is that software licensed with a perpetual license is licensed for use on the hardware and software that was current at the time that the software was released. As others have responded, there have been dramatic changes to both MacOS and Macintosh hardware since January 2005 (over 12 years ago) when Acrobat 7 was released. Apple has for years been very clear that application compatibility with future OS releases and new hardware is not one of their goals. (Ironically, even the Windows version of Acrobat 7 cannot run on any versions of Windows beyond Windows XP 32-bit due to system interfaces that have changed in Windows!)

We don't know what “other companies” you are referring to, but we are not aware of any other significant application software from 2005 for which free upgrades are offered to run on today's hardware and MacOS environment. For example, Microsoft doesn't offer any free update to 2005-era Office versions to work under MacOS 10.12.x.

For what it is worth, one of the best arguments for the subscription model is that you always have access to a version of the software that runs on the last hardware and OS versions without paying any upgrade/update fee.

CS2 + Acrobat 7 + Audition 3 (AND EARLIER) Activation Server is gone, so read below

https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs2-product-downloads.html?promoid=19SCDRQK

You MUST use the special version and serial number on the page, not your original disc or serial number

.

NOTE that CS2 will not install at all on a "modern" Mac with an Intel CPU, plus CS2 requires Rosetta and Apple removed Rosetta from OSX 10.7 (Lion)

Thanks. The link I previously found was only for Microsoft. This gives the information I think I need, which is that--despite spending hundreds of dollars osn an Adobe product--I now can throw it in the trash can and begin paying a subscription fee.

I think the message you get is when you try to install this software to a new Mac and the message tells you this software is too old to run. Adobe didn't stop it working, Macs changed completely. No software from that age runs today.

You are right, but other companies provide updated software that corresponds to Mac's new OS. I don't see where Adobe does that. The only offer I find is to junk what I bought and have used for years and subscribe to Creative Suite DC Pro. Not a happy customer at this point. Thanks for your answer.

It is a huge amount of work to make software work on the new Macs. Why should this be given away free? The original software continues to work as promised, until giving money to Apple. So we should all subsidise Apple's success? I can't agree. You left it at least 8 years too late for a discounted upgrade, even.

Acrobat Standard is not even available for Macs at all at the moment, so your software is not only terribly outdated, it's out-right discontinued... There's no reason to expect it to work on any current machine.

What a perfect example of "Passing the buck".  With Adobe, you pay for software, but there's no guarantee you'll get to keep it.  They decided years ago that the way to make money was to go totally by subscription.  I will never use another Adobe product again.  Pissed consumer site here I come.

Who's stopping you from keeping it? Using it is another issue altogether. If you have an older computer you can certainly use it. If you have a new one you won't be able to (most likely) due to changes in the OS architecture over the years. This is not something special to Adobe, nor is it entirely in their control. You can't even run some old MS applications on new Windows systems, not to mention old Apple apps...
