I'm attempting to run an update on my newly installed adobe acrobat XI pro. I just installed this program from a disc (still in original wrap - never opened - never previously installed - never previously registered). The installation went smoothly; serial number validated and program opened up with no issues.

However, when I went to "Help" on tool bar and ran a "check for updates", I ran into a snag. An update was found and successfully downloaded. However, when I installed the update, it seemingly got about 80% of the way through the update installation and then started backing out and reversing the update install. It gave me the following error:

Update Failed

Error 1328. Error applying patch to file. C:\Config.Msi\PTD3BA.tmp. It has probably been updated by other means, and can no longer be modified by this patch. For more information contact your patch vendor.

I called customer support (obviously in India) and spent 40 mins on the phone with absolutely no help! The operator kept insisting that my S/N was invalid. I was adamant that it was NOT invalid and reminded him that it was already "authenticated" at installation. He left me on hold several times then finally conceded that his system isn't recognizing the S/N because they are no longer offering support for this product and that support for this product is now only available through the "forum". All I can say to that is "WOW". (Is Adobe seriously not honoring their older products that are still out there!?)

Can anyone give me any insight into how I can successfully get my product updated? Thanks in advance!

Ok, so I finally figured this out on my own. (Thanks for your post John T. Smith but that link didn't have any info on Acrobat XI Pro.)

I played a hunch that that the "installer" on my CD may have been just too outdated and earlier update patches are just no longer available; so this created a gap that the "update" function simply couldn't bridge. I checked the properties on my installed program and noted that it was version 11.0.00. So I Googled "Adobe Acrobat XI Pro Download" and found this page on the Adobe site... Download Pro or Standard versions of Acrobat DC, XI, or X   I figured that this installer is probably the most recent available and therefore compatible with the current update patches???

So I...

  1. uninstalled the program that I previously installed from my CD (version 11.0.00)
  2. then restarted my computer
  3. then downloaded the Acrobat XI Pro Installer found at the above link (for windows the downloaded file name is AcrobatPro_11_Web_WWMUI)
  4. then ran the installation from the downloaded installer; NOTE: You will need to have your serial # handy.
  5. then restarted my computer
  6. then opened Acrobat XI Pro and checked the properties and saw that version 11.0.07 was now installed
  7. then I prayed... "Please Jesus..."
  8. then I ran "check for updates"; updates were found (NOTE: Before clicking to install update, close the program, then click ok)
  9. I got a prompt that "certificates were found"... clicked ok and the update was then successfully completed.
  10. then I checked the properties again and saw that version was now updated to 11.0.20
  11. then I praised... "Thank you Jesus!!...)

I am no "techie" but I can be a Pit Bull with a bone and was not giving up until I solved this mystery! I truly hope that this post helps someone else down the road.

God Bless.

Updates start here for old products, read to see if you need to install updates in number order, or if the updates are cumulative for the individual product http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
