Audio Files in PDF - Acrobat needs Flash??

Explorer ,
Oct 23, 2019 Oct 23, 2019

Hello,

a client asked me, if I could put an audio file in a pdf, that plays whenever a certain page is shown.

No problem, I thought. I opened rich media to add an audio file to the page. The ones that were highlighted in the selction dialogue (MP3s), were imported with the annoying message, that I would have to install the flash player.

I checked the acrobat help for natively supported files, but when I tried to convert my audio file to these format, the file wasn't clickable.

Is there an audio file format, that is supported by acrobat DC natively and works? And can it be exported, so users can see and hear it without any plugIns? I mean, that is what PDFs are all about, right?

Cheers, Tim

"Is there an audio file format, that is supported by acrobat DC natively and works?"

Yes, there are two:

- not compressed AIFF,

- not compressed WAV.

You can use them with the "Play sound" page/field action (don't use multimedia tools).

Flash is required for multimedia PDFs. They really aren't a good idea. Putting multimedia in makes the PDF entirely non-portable, in a big way.

Hello Test_Screen_Name,

I don't believe that is completley true. If I take a look at the list of supported file formats by Acrobat DC, there a some that shouldn't require a multimedia player (in a up-to-date version of acrobat).

Or does audio ALWAYS require a flash player?

Thank you for your answer, and sorry for the delay.

Where do I find the page and field actions?

I tried to play this but it keeps telling me to create a copy.  How do I play it?

Page action : open the Page (thumbnail) pane, right-clic on any thumbnail ==> Properties

Field action : open the form editor tools pane, right-clic (or double-clic) on any field ==> Properties.

This requires Acrobat Pro (not Reader).
