We use adobe acrobat Pro and when we use the toolbar on the right to try and password protect a document a blank screen pops up that is usually the screen where we do the password protection. This is new when we upgraded to acrobat Pro. It works if we go to the file - properties - security, but this way is a few more steps than just using the toolbar on the right.
Luckily when restarting the next morning it worked for the colleague who was having troubles. Sorry i can't be more help to others that are having the same issue, but ours did resolve itself after a "reboot"
We gave up and did a reinstall - this resolved the issue for at least 2 people.

Hi there
Please go to Edit (Win), Adobe Acrobat (Mac) > preferences > General > Uncheck 'Show online storage when saving PDF file' and 'Show online storage when opening the PDF file' > Click OK and reboot the computer and check.

August 2023 - Having the same issue. White Box and "Circle of Doom" when attempting to password protect document. If user reboots machine and tries again it may work once, but then goes back to "White box and Circle of Doom Mode"
Adobe Acrobat Pro - Continuous Release - Version 2023.003.20269 - 64 bit - On windows 10
Have tried the below -
In Preferences > General > Uncheck 'Show online storage when saving file' and 'Show online storage when opening file' > Click OK and reboot the computer once - No Effect.
Rename of the preference folder - No Effect
Reg Key deletion recreation -
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat[DC/2017/2020].
Delete the [DC/2017/2020] folder in the Registry Editor - No Effect
Only thing that has worked -
In Preferences > Enhanced Security > Uncheck 'Enable Protected mode at startup'
Got standard warning banners.
Changed - Protected View >to all files
The above is a work around but this issue has somthing to do with "protected mode at start up"
