How can I export a multiple page 'island' spread (5 pages) from InDesign to PDF, so that it says together horizontally? It is part of a larger single page document...

In InDesign, you can select "Spreads" when exporting your pdf, this will combine all of the spread pages (3-7 in this example) into one wide page on the pdf. If this is intended for printing, one or more pages might need to be adjusted for size, to allow for folding.

Thank you! I have tried this, but i think the problem is that my individual pages are very wide to start with (8000 pixels - it is a portfolio) and so when i export i can only see not quite 2 of the five pages in the spread - the rest has been chopped out... is there anyway around this?

You can set the initial view of your pdf to "single page" and "fit page" (File> Properties> Initial view). Try that, although this will only work in Acrobat & Reader and the person viewing the pdf would need their Acrobat page view preference set to "default".

Is this something i need to set in acrobat? i dont have file>properties>initial view in the indesign menu. I have tried fiddling around with this sort of thing in the export menu in indesign and it makes no difference. When i try to export it pops up a background task alert and then produces my mutilated pdf...

I wondered if i could make the whole document scroll horizontally as a solution instead - but thats not possible either is it?  Thanks again for your help!

File > Properties > Initial view is doen in Acrobat.

When you export from InDesign, choose the "Spreads" radio button. And then in the Viewing areas, choose View > Fit Page and Layout > Single Page.

Scrolling horizontally is not possible.

I have just tried exactly this and it comes up with box saying 'the document page size exceeds the range supported in PDF files. Exported pages will be rsized to fit within PDF limits' ... i suppose that means its just not possible?

You can set the layout pdf initial view when exporting from InDesign (under Layout:) but I'm suggesting you set the initial view properties in Acrobat. I don't think Acrobat can scroll horizontally.

Edit, the InDesign "Fit page" option is not available for PDF/X settings, which is one reason why I suggest doing it in Acrobat.
