I just upgraded from Acrobat XI to Acrobat DC on Windows 7, and now any new PDFs I create display with a generic PDF icon rather than a thumbnail preview of the file. Files created in Acrobat XI are displaying correctly (see screenshot). Is anyone else experiencing this and is there a resolution?
Hi djbilly
This was fixed in our update released yesterday. Make sure you are on the latest update by visiting Help > Check for updates.
Next, to enable thumbnail previews go to Preferences > General and then select Enable PDF thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer.
Thanks,

What about Adobe 10 Pro? I had to get rid of DC in order for my 10 Pro to be the default Adobe PDF Printer. There seems to be no other solution.

Hi Sachin Soni,
since the thumbnails for the 32bit version came back the 64bit versions (both acrobat pro and reader) had 2 (TWO) updates!
We now have the version 15.009.20079.
WHEN do we get the tumbnails back for the 64bit versions???
Btw: Since the version 15.9.20069.28170 the firefox PDF plugin didn't get an update!

Pathetic: This is the second time I've had to find a work around to make thumbnails visible. There should have been a huge warning when the upgrade was brought in. THIS VERSION WILL So annoying! The basis of pdf is that is a cross platform format. For that to be thumbnails are an essential component. Going back to previous version and will turn off auto-updates until Adobe comes up with a solution.

Adobe should be ashamed. Productivity has been totally ignored. Thanks to Tim, I added Foxit Reader. I have Adobe 10 Pro with thousands of PDF files. It's impossible to view the correct files without preview. What were they thinking? They were not thinking. I agree with one post that said, "This is so Microsoft. Not Adobe."
Foxit Reader is the solution in case you are late to this thread.
At least for now.
And there is not a "preferences" in 10 Pro. So, I'm assuming there has not been a fix for all products, as of yet.

Your comment
"Since you didn't leave that option open i am informing you that as a customer i am leaving all your products and switching to other solutions untill further notice.
and regards with hope that in the future you will have more understanding for your customers' needs."
The problem is -- I don't think Adobe is monitoring this important thread anymore. And, frankly, I don't think they care about this important productivity issue. I uploaded Foxit (thanks folks). They seem to have a handle on this and it has some other functionality. For instance, I like that they call Mail (to send the PDF) "Share" . Very 2016 Soc Media -- There are some shortcomings like having to take an extra step to get to My Files. This thread was helpful.

Found a work around installed Foxit reader and it will repopulate the thumbnails since adobe does not care.

Just had an uneventful discussion with support on this matter. The most I could get out of the person was "Acrobat DC does not contain this feature." I have the transcripts of the discussion if anyone is curious, but Adobe appear to give two craps about this feature and the impact to it's paying and non-paying customers.
Sad that my employer just bought me Acrobat DC Standard and this version is missing a very popular feature from prior versions. Looks like it's time to find a working alternative. Shame on you Acrobat dev team.

Please share, if you wish.
Yes, they don't care because it would take them minutes to resolve the issue and restore the damn thumbs!
People work with loads of PDFs and the thumbs are (were) there to make it easier for us to find what we need, when we need it.
But, as many have said over and over again, ADOBE DON'T CARE WHAT WE THINK.
Well know what Adobe? WE WILL STOP CARING ABOUT YOU!
P.S. I will NEVER pay for one of their products. Always have used free versions of Reader, etc.
What's “great” is now it seems we can't even download the older version since it gives install problems.... PATHETIC.

This is ridiculous!
I just got a new computer and upgraded from CS6 to CC 2015
For some reason Windows 10 is not showing me my pdf thumbnails! how weird...!
Until I chanced on this thread which enlightened me that it's Adobe who decided to remove it. I am going bananas - I cant find anything. Instead everything is just this one generic icon - its painful! And all because I decided to pay for CC!!!
I've tried all the suggestions in this thread, for some reason nothing worked for me.
Actually, the only thing that did work was totally uninstalling Acrobat DC etc. but when I reinstalled it (because I need it for workflow), I lost all thumbnails again!
Are there any more suggestions? Guidance? Adobe? (Just add that little checkbox already in the 64 bit version and we'll all be happy!)

Just installing Foxit did it for you? Nothing else?
You didnt have to uninstall DC?
Did you have to install any other codecs or fixes?
Which Windows are you running?
This is driving me nuts!

Hi,
you need two handful plug ins.
1. Adobe Reader preview handler x64 fixer / Fixes for 64-bit Adobe Reader preview handler and thumbnails
2. Sagethumbs / SageThumbs download | SourceForge.net
3. Foxit
4. Acrobat DC

That's 4??

Hi,
yes it is group of four but two plugins, see. Don't install Adobe Reader XI, X, 9. etc.. because it will pull the preview handler which is older than DC into the outlook 2010, 2013. etc, firefox and older Chrome (NPAPI), in your thumbnails in Windows Explorer.
Adobe Fix handler (Adobe Reader preview handler x64 fixer) engage outlook 2010, 2013 PDF previewer of files inside him, also in Windows Explorer. Win 7, 8, 10
So, Install those two, first Adobe fix handler for thumbnails.., than Foxit, you must tell him to be default handler, don't install automatically, exclude all, but core of Foxit, don't install browser plugins PDF and stuff !! just core !!.
Than after start Adobe Acrobat DC and tell him to be default PDF document handler. than you are ready to go.
It is just Adobe mess. Foxit is fastest thumb previewer on earth, while Adobe reader 9,X, XI is much slower, I am tried all those variants and this was only which works.

@zDeso
Thank you!
I decided to try exactly what you said, so, I uninstalled Acrobat DC, uninstalled Foxit, uninstalled Sumatra (just to start from scratch)
Then, I reinstalled DC, reinstalled the Adobe Fix handler, (I had sage installed already), Then I installed foxit 'core' and set it to default
Voila! All my thumbnails were generated! I am thrilled!
Thanks!
Now, I didnt switch the default back to DC yet (I'm scared! ).
My question is, when I do switch back to DC, will new pdfs have the generic icons or will foxit still provide thumbnails?
Thanks again
David

I tried the foxit thing but it didn't work for me and can't be bothered to keep mucking about with an issue that shouldn't of been an issue to start with, as I said to Pantone when they brought out the new swatches of thousands of colours, but didn't sequentially order them as they always had so you could find a colour quickly and easily, instead they put an index in the back in sequential order so you find the Pantone ref then it gives you the page to go to, to find that flipping colour, whoevers idea that is, as with these PDF thumbnails, take them outside...... and fire them! Out of a ruddy great cannon if we had our way! If it aint broke, don't blooming fix it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok next download "Defaults program editor" free wonderfull app, so choose .pdf from the search list and change open or edit to: Program path:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Acrobat\Acrobat.exe" "%1"
Click Next ....save...etc
To Edit an icon PDF; from Foxit to Acrobat DC icon go to and press ICON in Defaults programs editor option. (for small icons.)
or else if you cant win..
From Control panel, chose Default programs than Associate a file type......(choose PDF with ...Acrobat DC) bla bla....
Ok ?
Why you need Sagethumbs with Adobe fix x86 x64 application; because you still need previews in Explorer of AI, EPS and PS files, that's why. !!!!!
Forgot to wrote; for EPS, AI and PS from website of Sagethumbs (Copyright © mr. Nikolay Raspopov, 2004-2015.) - Very BIG THANKS !
To enable thumbnails for Adobe Illustrator (ai), Postscript (ps, eps) and Adobe Acrobat (pdf) files you need installed old Ghostscript library:
For PDF what said in text is for old 32 bit version od Acrobat 9, X ... not for 64 bit support,, you have Foxit. ,but for AI, EPS and PS is those PS libraries.

All I'm reading is a whole bunch of complicated things to do, which none of us should have to do.
Adobe should just bring back the thumbnail preview feature in the 64-bit version(s) and save us all having to look elsewhere (meaning other programs, etc) to find a solution(s).
Anyone working for Adobe reading this?!

Hi,
yes those thing should never happen, I don't think that Adobe miss 64 bit support and 32 bit on the first place, something happened and they never implement in newer version of DC.
Maybe Windows 10 is problem, like OSX have native PDF support for a while (years), they waited to see will it be solved on the other way, so Win 10 doesn't solve PDF previews. And now it's turn on Adobe.
So while they negotiate we need support for this problem isn't it ? So community have some complicated solutions which works, because we deal with hundreds or thousands of PDFs on ours servers and machines.
Regards and stay well

The problem exists in Win 7 so Win 10 by itself is not the problem. Adobe is the one and only cause of this inexcusable problem.

Didn't have to delete anything or add anything. Foxit reader fixed the problem in a few few minutes and I can view all the thumbnails I have which is extensive. With no help from Adobe who should really have fixed this problem in the first place.

I agree with SignLine in thread 165.
Adobe have never bothered to make this work for 64bit windows since its widespread use over seven years ago. Now the Fix Handler does not appear to work either for me. Even more annouying.
Thread 171 above is very optimistic in believing they will actually get this working.
The preview in windows explorer is also terrible as it locks the file so edits, overwrites are always a battle.
Certainly would not use my own money to buy this software.

Previewing files in the Finder is VERY important to me as well. Pretty much ALL other programs can be previewed - please fix this Mr. Adobe !!
