Fillable PDF fields becomes non-editable after saving

Hello everyone,

I created a fillable PDF form in Adobe Acrobat Pro that is used in our workshop. The staff opens the document in Adobe Reader, fill in some fields, and save it so they can continue working on it the next day.

The problem:
Sometimes when the file is saved in Adobe Reader, the document changes:

  • none of the form fields are fillable anymore

  • the values that were already entered become non-editable (as if the document has been flattened)

It seems like Adobe Reader is flattening the PDF during the save process, but I cannot find the cause.

Can someone help me?

Adobe Reader doesn't do this on it's own, or at all. The flattening is caused by some other process. For example, if the file was printed to PDF. Or if the file is managed by a document management system of some kind.
