I am using edit pdf within adobe acrobat- and it recognizes cursive text as one whole image of text on a background. all the other text is properly recognized because it isn't cursive. Is there a way to get this text recognized, it is not a large amount of text, just 3 words

If the Text Recognition command didn't pick it up then it didn't. You can really change the way it works.

No. Acrobat can't identify hand-written text.

My apologies for not being more specific. it is cursive/script typed text, not handwritten. It also isn't very elaborate and a simple script font.

Chances of success basically next to zero. Delete and retype.
