I sent a document to someone for comment and review. I have recieved the document back with comments and I can not open the comments. I can see the sticky notes throughout the document but I can not open them to read them. I'm on a MAC using Adobe Pro DC and Chrome.

Do they appear in the Comments List under the Comment panel? If not, the file was flattened and the comments became static images, which means their contents are lost for good.

Hi SJohnson
We are sorry for the trouble. As described you are not able to view the shared comments.
Is this a behavior with a particular PDF file or with all the PDFs? Please try with a different PDF file and check. If its a file specific issue please share the file with us for testing. Please upload the file to the document cloud (https://documentcloud.adobe.com/link/home/) generate the link and share the link with us.
What is the version of the Adobe Acrobat DC you are using? To check the version go to Help > About Adobe Acrobat DC
and make sure you have the latest version 20.009.20067 installed. Go to Help > Check for Updates.
If it still doesn't work, please try to turn off the protected mode for testing. Go to Adobe Acrobat DC > Preferences > Enhanced Security > Turn off the Protected Mode and uncheck the Enhanced Security > Click Ok and reboot the application and check.
Note: Please turn on the security after testing.
Let us know how it goes
Regards
Amal

hi there,
i have the same problem; created several documents with sticky notes.
after saving and sending, some notes in the files are fine, are clickable and can be read while notes in other files remain 'small notes icons' and don't show up in 'Commenst'
i just downloaded latest versions of Reader and Acrobat DC, work on the latest Mac.
running out of options and threads to read on this.
what are my options?
thanks for helping out.
cheers, Auke

I have the same issue, how do I tell my client not to flatten the pdf file? Is there a "save as" option my client can use to allow the comments to be seen?

This kind of thing doesn't happen by itself. If they use the normal Save command (and are using Adobe Acrobat or Reader) then it should not happen. You need to understand from them how they are saving the file, and in what application.

She created it in Adobe Reader DC. Should I ask her for the version number?

There must have been something else involved. Reader is not even technically capable of flattening a file in this way.

Found out more info: she extracted one page from a larger pdf. Today she emailed me the whole document and I was able to see the comments on that specific page. But I'm thinking that the comments still should've come with the page.

Again, Reader can't extract pages, so they must have used another application to do it, and in the process it flattened the page. They probably used some kind of "PDF Printer" to do it, is my guess.
