IE 11 on Windows 10 Adobe Reader DC stops loading in random places

Scenario:

In IE 11 you click a link that opens a pdf in a new tab. The progress bar starts to move from left to right loading the pdf in memory from the website. It stops at random times and locks up. The cpu spikes for adobe reader even though nothing is happening.

This is random. Sometimes it works fine. When it fails it fails at different times with the same file. Also, this works fine on many other computers.

What I've done:

- Uninstall and reinstall of adobe reader as of right now

- Put the dot com in compatability mode

- Put the dot com in trusted sites

- Unchecked Display in Read Mode by default, Allow fast web view, and Allow speculative downloading in the background in random orders to test combinations

- I've deleted all internet explorer temporary files and reset all settings for IE

- Checked the "add-on" in "Toolbars and Extensions" that "Adobe PDF Reader" is "Enabled" for 32bit and 64bit, disabled it then re-enabled it

- Did windows 10 updates

- Rebooted MANY times

I'd hate to have to install a different pdf viewer. I like Adobe Reader but I'm at my witts end to fix this.

Any direction and help is appreciated.

Hi,

What I can think of really quick, is to go to any of the computers that has no issues, and take  note of how their Preferences settings are configured in those machines and apply it in the misbehaving computer.

You also didn't mention if the misbehaving  computer  has the same software updates applied in bot Acrobat Reader and the web brower, as well as the operating syatem.

I've checked the preferences in the internet tab against known working machines and I've checked that windows 10 was fully updated. There are only a few options in the preferences section. Is there another tab in the reader's preferences that pertain to Internet Explorer's extension?

The pdf does load sometimes. Something is causing the pdf to stop loading at different times. I've switched to other in browser pdf viewers such as foxit and pdf architect. They work fine but people like adobe reader.

I think we are talking about two different possible issues:

  • One of the problems that I can identify based on your replies is dealing with Internet Explorer browser which no longer supported by most modern websites encouraging users to migrate to the new MS Edge (whch is Chrome based, Mozilla Firefox and Chrome). It seems that this problem is associated with how the Adobe PDF Maker add-on is interacting with this particular browser. If this is the case the problem has nothing to do with settings of Adobe Acrobat Reader. You may need to disable the add-on and see if the problem disappears and/or go to Internet Options, then click on the "Advanced" tab and "Restore advanced setting" and "Reset Internet Explorer settings" to default condition. Then reaapply the PDF Maker add-on.It is possible that another plugin or script is hijacking your browser and redirecting the browser to other zones disrespecting whatever you've configured on the Internet zones. This may me think that whatever is causing this you should be able to control it by disallawing popups and Active X controls.

  • The other problem that could be related with Adobe Acrobat Reader is that in the Preferences, Adobe Reader do depends on the Internet Explorer Internet zones to handle security. These are Preferences settings found in Trust Manager, Security (Enhanced) or sandboxing,  and  Protected Views.

  • You should not allow to have every PDF send information to the Internet; this is handled in the Trust Manager preferences settings. If you suspect that Internet Explorer could be the issue, then I  would recommend to switch to another web browser and set that browser as the default in Windows 10. This will bypass the Internet Explorer product  integration problem that you 're experiencing with the Adobe Acrobat Reader.  Just keep in mind that this is an integration issue between IE11 and Acrobat Reader, if you switch to another browser you shouldn't continue to experience this issue and it will not be necessary to user third-party PDF applications
