I'm asking a question about my work computer so I am not totally familiar with its configuration nor am I it
s original user. With that being said, I logged in one day and noticed the file explorer no longer specified Illustrator files. AI files are labelled as PDFs instead. Other types of files show up fine. Is there any way to fix this?

Thank you for reaching out.
The default application to open the Ai files seems to have changed to Acrobat. Try changing the default application for the .ai format files using the following steps:
- Go to Windows settings > Apps > Default Apps.
- Scroll down and select "Choose default apps by file types."
- Scroll to the .ai format and select the application as required.
Let us know how it goes.
Thanks,
Meenakshi
