Is there a downside to adding metadata to a PDF?

Is there such thing as "too much" metadata? Does metadata contribute to overall file size? Could too much metadata result in slower download time?

There is no limit to how much metadata can be in a PDF file. For certain PDF subset standards such as PDF/X, PDF/A, and PDF/VT, metadata plays a key role.

Metadata isn't free! Every byte of metadata adds one byte to the PDF file size and the larger the file size, the longer it takes to download a file. Duh!!!
