Issue saving a PDF file from an SAP Fiori session. Clicking the save button freezes the browser.

I'm the Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) administrator at my comany (having recently switched over from Citrix).  I have a location where users are must use the Fiori side of SAP for their work.  When generating .PDF Files which they need to save, the users click the save button and the Fiori session freezes and a save dialog is never presented.  We use the Edge browser.  We've done several things to troubleshoot this.  We set Edge to always download the files, which fixed the issue for about an hour then the lockups started happening again.  In Acrobat Reader, we've tried changing the registry key AcroPDF.PDF.1 Edit Flags and also turning off Enhanced Security features and we still have the issue.  I have one more thing I'm going to try with them (set Acrobat Reader is default app and add the Adobe Acrobat Extension for Edge).  I was hoping someone else may have seen something similar and be able to help me with suggestions.  My thanks in advance for any assistance you can give.

Hi

Thanks for reporting this! Based on your description, it looks like the issue occurs in a browser-based SAP Fiori environment when saving a PDF, which suggests the problem may be environment-specific, possibly related to:

Possible Causes:

  1. Browser-PDF Viewer Interaction:

When SAP Fiori triggers a PDF download, the browser’s built-in PDF viewer or Adobe Acrobat’s browser plugin could cause freezing, especially if browser extensions or security policies are interfering.

  2. Pop-Up Blockers or Content Security Settings:

Modern browsers often restrict auto-downloads or file handling initiated by web apps, depending on site permissions and browser security settings.

  3. SAP MIME Settings or Output Method:

If the Fiori system is configured to stream PDFs directly without a proper content-disposition header, it may cause issues in browser rendering behavior.

You may try the following, and I would suggest reaching out to dedicated support (Business users):

1. Try an Alternate Browser:

  • Test the same action in another browser (e.g., Firefox, Edge, Safari) to confirm if it’s browser-specific.

2. Clear Browser Cache and Disable Extensions:

  • Disable any browser extensions (especially PDF-related) and clear cached content.

3. Check Acrobat’s Browser Integration:

  • If using Acrobat with browser integration enabled, ensure it’s up-to-date. Consider temporarily disabling the integration to test.

4. Ask SAP Admin to Review MIME Settings:

  • Ensure that the SAP output configuration (e.g., content-disposition header) is set to trigger downloads correctly and not open inline in the browser.

And wait for more inputs from other users

Thank you very much for these suggestions.  We use Edge and I have not tried Chrome because our Cybersecurity Team has locked us down to Edge.  We tried clearing cache. We have gone back and forth with extensions and the issue happened either way.  I had also had a suggestion to have my SAP Support team check the MIME settings which they verified they were correct.  Last night, I tried resetting their AVD Profiles and that would allow one or two downloads then it would lock again. But we did find a work around last night to save the files locally to the VM host in AVD and then transfer the files from the host VM to their PC.  That is working, but the file move from the host to their PC does take quite a while.  I'm thinking the delay of them being in China and our hosts being in the Eastern United States is at least part if not all of the issue.  If any of this information helps you think of some other potential cause or fix, please let me know.

Hi @dschoellkopf ,

Just for troubleshooting purposes, and if you cyber admin staff haven't disabled the ability  to launch URL PDFs using Internet Explorer Mode on MS Edge, what happens if the users enable to load URL PDFs in Internet Explorer mode?

At work we have a similar setup in an enterprise environment, except that there is no interfacing with any SAP environment .

Additionally, users are not allowed to use any web browser plugins or extensions, such as the Acrobat extension (for security reasons).

All workflows are achieved via MS Edge web browser integrated through Office365 and Sharepoint.

Users interact behind encrypted WANs and Intranet domains that employ Azure-based VPNs, and a extra layer of web browser Proxy enforced via Active Directory Group Policy.

Adobe Acrobat Pro is set up as the default app (not Microsoft Edge web browser), but the users have the ability to switch to MS Edge.

Since I don't have the ability to test Fiori SAP on my end, and assuming SAP is not the issue (in your case),  we don't run into such issues when using the setup described above (that is, regardless of different  time zones , or poor Internet speeds on any countries which the organization conducts business with).

One more observation though, opening URL PDFs in Internet Explorer Mode on MS Edge interacts beautifully with OneDrive and the computer's local file system.

However, this part of our workflow is the only one I've observed that degrades considerably when we experience poor Internet connectivity or congested LANs. Nevertheless, we can still work with PDFs with no issues.

Based off of @Tariq Ahmad Dar guidence, I am inclined to agree to troubleshooting his list of Probable Causes with special emphasis on steps #2 and #4.

If steps #2 and #4 are not the root cause, then I suspect step #3 S/MIME setup could be the issue (at the SAP level or via Active Directory Group Policy).

In which case, this scenario should only trigger when users are signing and acrypting email messages (both webmail through web browser or by using the Outlook app).

Or perhaps, it could also trigger as users try to share PDFs with other users directly through Microsoft Teams or other Office365 apps, with controlled collaboration standards enforced).

As observed by @Tariq Ahmad Dar , it is possible that your organization have blocked by default the ability for users to install or update S/MIME.

It may also be a good idea to contact Fiori SAP support and see what they can dig on their end.

@dschoellkopf ,

I forgot to add another observation in regards to your last comment:

  • What happens if the user exits OneDrive completely and manually stops any background processes from syncing files, and clear/reset the Sync cache?
