Links in PDF Issue

New Here ,
Jan 07, 2026 Jan 07, 2026

The links in my PDF work for the designer, but not for anybody else. Has anybody had this issue? He's not a new designer, this design process has not changed. Two of us have tried to open the links on different computers and with different applications, with no success.
Any ideas are welcome.

Hi there!

Hope you are doing well and thanks for reaching out.

As described, the links in the PDF work for the designer, but not for anybody else. There are a few common reasons why links might work for the creator but not for others:

1. Link Type (Local vs. Web URLs): Sometimes designers accidentally set links to local file paths (e.g., pointing to a file on their computer) instead of a proper web URL. Those will only open on their machine.

2. Application Used to View the PDF: Not all PDF viewers support interactive links the same way. If the designer is checking in Adobe Acrobat/Reader, but others are using browsers, Preview (Mac), or 3rd-party viewers, the links may not behave correctly. Try testing in Adobe Acrobat Reader to compare.

3. Security or Restrictions: Some apps and company environments disable clickable links in PDFs for security reasons. If you're in a managed environment, it could be blocked.

4. PDF Compatibility Settings: Depending on how the PDF was created (from InDesign, Illustrator, Canva, etc.), interactive settings may not have been preserved. The designer may need to check the PDF settings and ensure “Hyperlinks” or “Interactive Elements” are enabled.

Things you can try:

  • Ask the designer which software they used to create the PDF.
  • Confirm that the links are actual web URLs and not local paths.
  • Open the same file in Adobe Acrobat Reader and test again.
  • If possible, ask the designer to re-create the PDF with the links as described in the help page https://adobe.ly/49cEi5U

If you can share which software was used to create the PDF and what viewer you’re opening it with, we can help narrow it down further.
