Missing Close File

I know a lot of us use shortcuts, but seriously?  You have file save, file save as, but no "CLOSE"?

Hi @becky5FEA ,

Would you mind sharing a screenshot of what you are referring to?

I will assume that when you say "shortcuts" you are actually talking about the menu options that are listed in the File Menu.

In which case, it would be helpful if you are able to confirm if this issue is happening only with certain types PDF documents and not with any (and all PDF documents) that you open in Adobe Acrobat.

The "Close File" menu item is listed in the File Menu.

That said, it is worth noting that multiple PDF documents are usually opened and viewed in Adobe Acrobat's Worksapce in "Tabbed View" by default.

See more here:

So, selecting "Close File" from the File Menu will close the tab where the active PDF file is currently viewed. And using the keyboard shortcut combination of "CTRL" + W also closes PDF files individually.

While selecting "Exit Application" from the File Menu (or using the CTRL + Q keyboard shortcut) will terminate the Adobe Acrobat session completely (regardless of multiple tabbed views).

Please confirm if you are not able to see the "Close File" option listed in the File Menu.

Close file is not an option in my menu.  In face, it took me a while to realize that the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner was the File Menu.

You can disable new Acrobat.

I didn't see that option until now.  I went back to the old, which also still allows one to extract pages from a signed document.  Which I use on a daily basis.

Thanks for the suggestion!

You can try @Bernd Alheit suggestion.

But that is a normal design behavior when only one file is open.

The "Close File" menu option should become available if you open two or more files in Acrobat.

See if that is the issue.

Hello @becky5FEA

I hope this message finds you well. I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with Acrobat DC.

Could you please let me know which version of Acrobat DC you're currently using? You can check this by going to Help > About Acrobat. It's important to make sure that you have the most recent version (23.01.20093) installed. If not, you can go to Help > Check for updates and install the latest version. Don't forget to reboot your computer once the update is complete.

You may also try repairing the installation from the Help menu if you're using Windows.

In addition, resetting the Acrobat preferences to default may help resolve the issue https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/how-to-reset-acrobat-preference-settings-to-defau...

If the issue persists, it's worth trying to create a new test user profile with full admin rights (for Windows) or enabling the root account (for MAC) and using the application there.

I hope these steps help resolve the issue. Let us know how it goes.

Also, please go through the help page https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/new-acrobat-experience.html and see if that works.

Thanks Amal.  My current version of the  says it is (23.01.20093). I cannot tell you what the new version was, will assume it was the same?  It was the NEW streamlined version that streamlined itself out of the CLOSE FILE and the ability to extract signed documents.  I followed the earlier advice and disabled the new version.  Unfortunately, there is no way of getting back to the new version.  When I click on Check for Updates, it says I have the newest version, But all is well, I have the functions I need with the classic look one.

Scratch that, the enable new version is under view on the old version, and the disable new version is under FILE in the new version.

Reinstallation is not the problem. "New acrobat" has changed functionality, that is the problem.

I second this.
The new sleek interface should not remove options. To use "new acrobat" I have to use the mouse where a simple few keystrokes would have sufficed.
Also, many of the more useful features are now hidden or not available at all (extracting pages is more complicated).

It is fine to change the interface. Not fine to remove useful options. For example, why is it so hard to maintain File Close?
If absolutely necessary embed a bunch of commands as a group of subcommands (adds one keystroke to access it).

Hi @GerardTromp

The new experience is an exciting step forward for Acrobat's future. But if it doesn’t suit your needs, you can still revert to the previous experience.

Windows: Select the hamburger menu, and then choose Disable new Acrobat.

macOS: Go to View > Disable new Acrobat.

All anybody wants to do is close a file.  Instead we get told that we can't close files because "the new experience is an exciting step forward."   Fortunately, it appears that, despite the best efforts of Acrobat to keep it a secret, Ctl-F4 still works to close a file.  (Until it's disabled in another exciting step forward. ) And I'm sure the next new experience will be that we can't open a file.
