I am trying to convert a Word 2003 document (Windows XP) into a PDF using Acrobat PDF Maker in Acrobat 9.1 Pro Extended. When I use the Acrobat PDF Maker, the resulting PDF is missing text that is in the original Word document. The text is the last two lines of a paragraph that has flowed to the top of the following page. However, when I print this document to the Adobe PDF printer, the text is there in the resulting PDF. Also, when my boss used the Acrobat PDF Maker in Acrobat 8.1.2 to convert the same Word document to PDF, the PDF contained the missing text.
Does anybody know why this is happening and how I can fix this issue?

We have same issue since upgrading from 8 to 9 Pro. None of these suggestions are working for us. Happens with any version of Word (XP, 2003 or 2007). This did not happen in version 8.

I posted earlier in this thread, thinking I'd fixed the problem I'm having with text going missing or being shifted during conversion from Word 2003 to Acrobat Pro 8.1.7. Turns out fixing the problem in the document I was working with was a fluke. My most recent problem occurs in the document I've attached. The original Word document has "Husband" and "Witnesses" on page 4. But after conversion, those lines appear on page 3 in the .pdf file. I will post the Word document using the "Share" function if I can figure out how.
I'm not using any different fonts or anything else -- it's a very standard text document. The mentioned text is in a table, though. However, in the previous document I had trouble with, there was no table.
Any help would be appreciated. Like another poster, I draft legal documents that must be 100% accurate. It's very scary to have text disappear, and annoying to have it shift and mess up the formatting.
Thanks!

You are looking at a WORD reflow issue I am pretty sure. The WORD Document and PDF look the same to me, but my default printer is the Adobe PDF printer. In earlier versions of WORD, WORD would reflow the document based on the printer selected. You can change this in the options (deep down in the options) by turning off the use of printer metrics. This switch is off by default in OFFICE 2007. The other way around the problem is to select the Adobe PDF printer before you edit your document. Adjust all of the formating and it should look the same in the PDF.

Natalie,
I am a lawyer and I just noticed this problem in PDF conversion of Supreme Court briefs going out tomorrow (thankfully). Two lines of text are missing between page 5 and 6 of the brief. I check all other pages (first and last word only) and everything else appears to be there. Your example seems to be reformatting the paragraph, as oppose to just cutting off text lines. Perhaps mine is and I don't know it. I do not have the hard copy with me to compare and now my word version doesn't match the original word output for some reason. Somehow the whole doc was reformatted and is now 76 pages as opposed to 72 before. All I did was try to converted it again.
I'll have to have it scanned, but the quality and accessibility is not good with scans. Recently upgraded to Pro 9 from Pro 8. Never noticed it before Pro 9. It is disappointing and from a legal prespective, scarry as H__l. I can't proof two documents, without losing half my time.
I hope somebody solves this or this product will be useless in our field, and I suppose many others.
Mike

You did not indicate your version of WORD and that may be an issue. In any case, try selecting the Adobe PDF printer in the print menu of WORD (or select it as your default printer). Then do a ctrl-A followed by F9 to reflow and renumber the entire document. Actually, OFFICE 2007 started turning off use of printer metrics by default, but OFFICE 2003 and earlier had use printer metrics turned on, causing this problem. With older printers, the printer metric issue was probably important, but with newer, high-resolution printers it is probably not critical and is likely the reason for the change.
One you have reflowed and fixed the numbers in the document, print to the Adobe PDF printer. If you need links and bookmarks, then you will need to use PDF Maker, but might want to turn off some of the features to improve the file size and maybe avoid some of the other issues that this topic has been discussing.

Thank you. I am using word 2003. How do I turn off printer metrics? Is
this part of word or Adobe? Where do I turn off these features? Adobe, I
assume, but do I open an adobe document and do it or is a feature of the
adobe PDF maker that I access through word?
If I set the default printer to pdf and follow your instructions, will my
original word document return to its original format? Luckily, I have
another copy of the original at the office I can access, but I do not want
to screw it up too.

Printer metrics are buried in a list of options for prior version compatibility (as I recall) in the WORD options menu.

I tried this and it worked using PDF Printer. I also tried using Pro 9 and,
while I haven't checked each page, the place where the error was occurring
is ok. I'll let you know.

I am using Windows XP and Word 2003 (sorry)
I tried this and it worked using PDF Printer. I also tried using Pro 9, after I had selected PDF printer for the first try as default (not sure this matters for Pro 9)and while I haven't checked each page, the place where the error was occurring is ok. I'll let you know after I check everything tomorrow.
Thanks. That was fast and helpful. Please send my thanks to those concerned.

Oh, I forgot. I found the Adobe features options in the pull down menu from the word document and turned off all but bookmarks. I set the quality to high quality print in the pull down list inside of that option menu..

That Adobe menu is only for PDF Maker. All other options for the printer are in the Printer menu (properties). I generally recommend that folks use the Press or Print options to embed all fonts. The Standard job options does not embed all fonts.

I checked the PDF maker versions against my word document this morning and
it worked. I have not found the metrics option, but I am not inclined to
mess with anything, since it appears to be working. I know nothing about
embedding fonts, but somewhere in this process, I was required to select a
font to replace a font in the document. Where are the printer menu
properties? Is this the option panel that appears when I try to print a
word doc? Or is this something I do from a printer control panel (if there
is such)?
Thanks.

I am having the same problem in excel 2003. It is a 2 column wooksheet, with perhaps 30 lines. Only one line of text prints. In Adobe PDFmaker, if I uncheck enable accessabilty and reflow with tagged . . . then It works correctly. The problem is that I want to put this on our website, and want the accessablity capabilities. My fonts and all the same, arial.

I posted a similar problem here:

No resolution for me yet either. I assume it's a bug in Adobe.

I am having the same problem with missing text. I convert documents from Word to PDF to file in court. Missing text from a court pleading is definitely not good. I have contacted Adobe Chat and sat through a long phone call with a tech but still have the problem.

For court you may simply want to print, though the accessibility feature would be useful there I guess. I have printed and used PDF Maker on the DOC file that was posted earlier and had no problems with the result. In both cases I had all fonts embedded. That may be the key for all of you. In that case, try setting your default job settings to either print or press type settings, not the standard. Also, check the documents you are having problems with to see if all the fonts were embedded. My guess is that all the issues relate to fonts that did not get embedded. You may also have an issue with the "use Local Fonts" menu selection.

It's 12 yeas later - but I just started having the same issue. Converting from Word to PDF in various ways deleted random sentences. Following the advice of one person in this thread, I deselected the option for enabling accessibility, which solved the problem. (Phew). But the question is - why did this happen? It just started last week and I hadn't installed or updated anything or made any other changes that I know of. No changes to fonts.
It was EXTREMELY frustrating until it was solved - with partners needing documents with tight deadlines.

Same problem with you in 2022!
My word version is Microsoft Office 2019 (2201 Build)
My Acrobat Pro DC version is 2021.011.20039.
And I think both are the latest version. All the font I used in my word file is Times New Roman. Only by turning off that option, the produced pdf would be entire.
