Up front: I have no idea whether the below is at all possible. I vainly searched, maybe I overlooking a feature, maybe there isn't, I don't know.
Acrobat 2020 Pro
I have a 180 pages document. On each page there is a date. Pages have been scanned.
At some points the sequence isn't in order, e.g. between year 2004 pages, there are some year 2007 pages.
Is there a way to:
a) sort selected pages only, not the entire document
or
b) is there a way to select pages containing a specific text
e.g. I may search on -2005, but only can go from one page to the other. I do not know a way to select all pages based on (in this example) -2005
I might consider to extract those pages to a new PDF document, sort that document, this for all years and then re-combine them again but with proper sorting.
Maybe there are easier or better ways?
Thanks.

I think you may combine Advanced Search, or build an indexed catalogue.
See if this older discussion gives you additional insights:

Yes, using a script, but it's tricky. The issue is how to select the pages in a way that the script can identify.
It can't know which pages you've selected in the Pages panel, for example. You have to mark them in some way first, for example by adding a comment to them, or by bookmarking them. Then it could locate them and move them to the end of the file, or even extract them as a new file.

A script can't select pages. It can perform other operations on them, though (see my reply above).
However, if the file was scanned then in order for it to be able to locate text you must first run the Text Recognition command on it.
All of this would require the development of a custom-made script, so it's not a trivial task. I have plenty of experience with this type of development, so if you're interested in hiring a professional to create it for you, feel free to contact me privately by clicking my user-name and then on "Send a Message".
