Page number in print does not display in Adobe's page number box

Hello,

I've just had an update of my Adobe Acrobat (in Creative Cloud) to this version

Fnancy_7-1683658362123.png

and realized that the page numbers in print do not get to display in the page number display, but it used to in earlier versions, when they are set up properly in Page Labels window, e.g.

Fnancy_5-1683656300316.png

Here, 105 is the print page number and 106 is page number in Acobe.

However, in this new version of Adobe Acrobat, it shows only page number in Adobe Actobat

Fnancy_1-1683653826123.png

although the print page number is set up as 73 which displays in the Pages panel, as shown in the below screenshot

Fnancy_2-1683653948960.png

Ideally it should show like 73 (7/16), or

Fnancy_6-1683656500387.png

I was wondering if I've missed something? Or was it designed intentionally? Any help is much appreciated.

That's the way the PDF file has been created and has nothing to do with Acrobat. Where is that document from?

Hi Abambo,

Thanks so much for you quick response! The file has been created from the hard copy at our agency, and it displays differently in the two versions of Acrobat, before and after the update. Below are two screenshots of the same page in the same file:

Before

After

Fnancy_1-1683734435321.png

Wondering whether I've missed something in the settings or somewhere that may have the numberings show the same in the new Acrobat?

Hi Fnancy,

Thank you for reaching out.

We see the difference you mentioned in the screenshot. However, we will require a sample PDF to replicate this.

Would you mind sharing the PDF or a sample file with similar page number issues with us? Share the OS version as well.

Thanks,

Meenakshi

Hi Meenakshi,

Please find attached a sample file. The file was created for students with perceptual disabilities and so it is supposed to be used only for troubleshooting purpose.

Thanks for your help!

Adobe switched to using the page labels in all the dialogs that deal with pages, instead of the physical page numbers. And unfortunately, there's no way to override this setting.

Because your file contains a cover page (labelled "f1" in this sample file), all the other pages in it are "shifted" by 1. So page 2 is labelled "1", page 3 is labelled "2", etc.

To fix it you'll need to remove the page labels. Right-click the first page in the Pages panel and select Number Pages, then enter the following settings:

Click OK and your pages will be labelled the same as their page numbers, and you could use them like before.

Thank you for your response and the explanation!

The "f1" label is used so that page numbers in Acrobat could match that in Print:

Fnancy_0-1683758035744.png

We could see in this screenshot image that page numbers in print and that in the Pages panel match (because we label the first cover page “f1”, and for other books, we may need f1, f2, f3 to make the two match). This way it is easier to navigate through pages, and we could easily know when a page is missing from the file (if page 1 matches, and then go to the last page, if they match, we know the file is complete and no page is missing; otherwise, if they don’t match on the last page, we know some page must be missing from the file.).

However, if I remove the page labels, the two page numbers are different, and when physical page 13 is open, page 14 is focused in the Pages panel:

Fnancy_1-1683758035755.png

That will be very confusing, especially sometimes the two numbers may be 1 vs 12, 2 vs 13 etc.

Our users are students with perceptual disabilities and it is quite likely that the teacher asks the students to go to a certain page, say page 13, in the class, and when the student types 13 in the box, page 12 (in this file) will come up—Isn’t that confusing?

It looks like when label “fx” is used to make page numbers in print and in Acrobat match, it does work; it is just that it does not display on the right side bar. So is it a big ask to have the print page number display in page number box/tab on the right above the 14 and 31, as it used to? e.g.

Fnancy_2-1683758035755.png

That indicates, you’re on page 13 of the book and it is page 14 out of the total number of pages 31.

The number on the page itself is irrelevant to this. It might be useful to you, but it plays no role in the numbers you see in the application.

The bottom is what you're asking for is not possible. You can request Adobe to add this new feature, though, here: https://www.adobe.com/products/wishform.html

Hi TRY67, thanks for your response and suggestion! It is not impossible; Acrobat used to display it before this update which I had 2 week ago.

I can confirm that the new version is not showing the page labels but phisical page numbers. The old version was showing it when the toolbar was at the top not on the right side as in the latest version. Or this is a bug or there is a setting that we are missing.
